Furnace tune-up

Gas and electric furnaces.

  • Burners & flameCleaned and checked for a steady, even flame.
  • Flame sensor & igniterCleaned and tested, the most common cause of a furnace that lights and then shuts off.
  • Flue & ventingChecked from the furnace to the roof so exhaust goes outside, not into your attic.
  • Safety switchesHigh-limit and rollout switches tested so the furnace shuts down if something goes wrong.
  • Gas pressureChecked so the furnace burns the way it was built to.
  • Blower motorAmp draw measured and the blower wheel looked over.
  • Filter & thermostatFilter checked or replaced, thermostat tested in heat mode.
  • Electric furnacesHeat strip amp draw and sequencers tested instead of burners.

Heat pump tune-up

Heat pumps and their backup heat strips.

  • Defrost cycleTested so the outdoor unit clears its own frost on cold mornings.
  • Refrigerant readingsPressures and temperatures measured and written down.
  • Backup heat stripsAmp draw tested, so the emergency heat works if you need it.
  • Capacitor & contactorTested before they fail. These are the parts that most often leave you with no heat.
  • Electrical connectionsChecked and tightened at the outdoor unit and the air handler.
  • Outdoor coilLeaves and debris cleared so the unit can pull heat from the air.
  • Filter, drain & thermostatFilter checked or replaced, drain line cleared, thermostat tested.

Signs your heat needs a look

Catch these early and you're far less likely to be without heat on the coldest night of the year.

Cold air from the vents

The system runs, but the air coming out never warms up.

A smell that won't go away

A little dust smell on the first start is normal. Burning, electrical, or gas smells are not.

Heat pump iced over

Some frost is normal. A solid block of ice that won't clear needs a look.

Emergency heat light stays on

Your heat pump may have stopped heating, and the backup heat strips are carrying the load.

Breaker keeps tripping

Heat strips and motors pull a lot of power. A tripping breaker means something is wrong.

Short cycling or strange noises

Turning on and off every few minutes, or new banging, squealing, or grinding.

Furnace flue pipe pulled apart at a joint in an attic, New Orleans

Gas furnace? Have the flue checked.

We found this flue pipe pulled apart in a New Orleans attic. Furnace exhaust was venting straight into the attic instead of outside, a carbon monoxide risk the homeowner had no way of seeing.

The furnace tune-up checks the flue, burners, and safety switches, not just whether warm air comes out. Make sure you have working carbon monoxide detectors too.

What's included in the Beat the Cold tune-up?

It depends on your system. A furnace tune-up covers the burners, flame sensor, flue, safety switches, and blower. A heat pump tune-up covers heating mode, the defrost cycle, refrigerant readings, the backup heat strips, and the electrical parts. Both end with a written Comfort Report. The full checklists are on this page.

How much is the tune-up special?

Call or text 985-771-1523 for this season's Beat the Cold price. You'll know the price before we start.

Is a tune-up worth it if my heat is working fine?

Yes. Most no-heat calls start as something small, like a weak capacitor, a dirty flame sensor, or a loose wire, that a tune-up would have caught. It's cheaper and easier to fix in October than at 2am on the coldest night of the year.

Why does my heater smell when I first turn it on?

A dusty, burning smell for the first 15 to 30 minutes of the season is usually dust burning off the heat strips or burners. It should fade. If the smell is strong, smells electrical or like gas, or doesn't go away, turn the system off and call us.

My heat pump is blowing cool air. Is it broken?

Not always. Heat pump air feels warm, not hot, and the unit runs a defrost cycle in cold weather. But if the house won't hold temperature, the outdoor unit is iced over for a long time, or the emergency heat light stays on, it needs a look.

How long does the special run?

Through February 28.

Who gets the 10% discount?

Veterans and first responders. It covers parts, repairs, and the Comfort Plan.
